06 December 2012 Ganesh Versus the Third Reich returns to OZ

Back to Back Theatre is delighted to announce that 2013 – one of the busiest years of touring for the company to date – will include a season of Ganesh Versus The Third Reich at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, in our hometown of Geelong, running from 28 Feb – 3 March 2013.

09 November 2012 Ganesh Versus the Third Reich bound for the Big Apple in January 2013

Back to Back Theatre is delighted to announce that 2013 – one of the busiest years of touring for the company to date – opens with a season of Ganesh Versus the Third Reich at the acclaimed Under The Radar Festival in New York.

The season at Under The Radar Festival, running from 9-14 January, launches the first of two North American tours of Ganesh Versus the Third Reich in 2013. Following the season in New York the touring party travels to the Hopkins Center for the Arts in Hanover, the Centre for the Art of Performance (UCLA) in Los Angeles and the Walker Art Centre in Minneapolis.

25 September 2012 Ganesh Versus the Third Reich wins 2012 Helpmann Award

Back to Back Theatre is extremely delighted and proud to announce Ganesh Versus the Third Reich has won the 2012 Helpmann Award for Best Play.

The cast and crew of Ganesh Versus the Third Reich are readying themselves in Rotterdam to open a season at the Rotterdamse Schouwburg. The celebrations will flow after opening night on Wednesday 26 September.

In receiving a Helpmann Award, the company is honoured to be recognised for distinguished artistic achievement and excellence in Australia’s live performing arts sector. Back to Back Theatre shares this esteem with our Ganesh Versus the Third Reich presentation partners, Melbourne Festival and Malthouse Theatre.

Ganesh Versus the third Reich won the 2009 Kit Denton Fellowship for Courageous Writing, the 2011 Age Critics’ Award for best new Australia work at the Melbourne Festival and three Green Room Awards for Best Ensemble Performance (Alternative & Hybrid Performance), Best Direction (Theatre), and Best Production (Theatre).

Ganesh Versus the Third Reich is touring the world in 2013, with two North American and one European Tour scheduled to keep the ensemble busy. Check the calendar for all season announcements.

07 September 2012 Back to Back wins the 2012 Australian Disability Enterprises Excellence Award

Back to Back are honoured to be the recipients of the 2012 Australian Disability Enterprises Excellence Award. Ensemble member Sarah Mainwaring and Artistic Associate Tamara Searle accepted the award at a ceremony in Perth yesterday.

Australian Disability Enterprises Excellence Award is an award that encourages and promotes the significant contribution that disability organisations make in improving the lives of people with disability. We are honoured to be recognised within such a broad range of businesses and operations that work within the Australian Disability Enterprise nation-wide.

29 August 2012 Ganesh Versus the Third Reich nominated for Helpmann Award

Ganesh Versus the Third Reich has been nominated in the Best Play category for a 2012 Helpmann Award. The Helpmann awards recognise distinguished artistic achievement and excellence in the many disciplines of Australia’s live performance sectors. Back to Back Theatre is very pleased to be in the company of the other nominees.

The 12th Annual Helpmann Awards Ceremony will be held on Monday 24 September at the Sydney Opera House.

07 August 2012 Democracy on Tour

Our community residency project The Democratic Set is still touring the country and this week the ‘set’ is at Arts House, North Melbourne Town Hall. You’re welcome to go along and watch the participants film their 15 second live performance, which is being directed by Back to Back’s Artistic Director Bruce Gladwin.

12 July 2012 Announcing our Panelists for Hell House - Provocation, Belief & Morality

Our upcoming project Hell House – Provocation, Belief & Morality is fast approaching. Rehearsals for the performance component of the piece are now in fill swing and the panelists for the post-performance forums have been confirmed.

The forums are panel based with a line-up of speakers from a diverse range of disciplines and opinions, creating an atmosphere of open discourse between the panel and the audience.

They are:
Provocation – August 3

Belief – August 4
Facilitated by Dr. Rachael Kohn

04 June 2012 Hell House - Provocation, Belief & Morality season announced

Together with Arts House, we are pleased to announce the upcoming season of Hell House – Provocation, Belief & Morality from August 3-5 at the Meat Market.

Using a staged performance of the live theatre show Hell House as a catalyst for discussion, Back to Back Theatre is initiating three community forums on themes of provocation, belief and morality.

Performed by 40 community actors from Geelong and south-western Victoria, Hell House will be staged as a museum would exhibit a cultural or religious artefact.

The post-performance forums will be panel based with speakers from a diverse range of disciplines and opinions, creating an atmosphere of open discourse between the panel and the audience.

The forum topics and facilitators are Provocation with Scott Stephens (Friday, 3 August 2012), Belief with Dr. Rachael Kohn (Saturday, 4 August 2012) and Morality with Peter Mares (Sunday, 5 August 2012).

29 May 2012 New Artistic Associate announced

It is with a great delight that we warmly welcome our new Artistic Associate Tamara Searle to the Back to Back team. Tamara is an actor, director, teacher, and theatre-maker who comes to Back to Back Theatre with a wealth of experience in working with artists with disabilities, through her roles with BoilOver Ensemble and Fusion Theatre. She has worked with Back to Back on Theatre of Speed in 2011 and 2012.

Tamara will be joining the company from Thursday 16 August 2012. Prior to this, she will be undertaking a professional development in the US funded by Australia Council for the Arts – Artstart program and The Ian Potter Cultural Trust.
